COMMON QUESTIONS

Are there different types of smoke detectors?

Yes, the two common types use Ionic or Photoelectric technology to detect fire and smoke.  The detector will be labeled [i] or [P].

What is the difference between Ionic and Photoelectric detectors?

Ionic detectors are slightly faster at detecting fast flaming fires. However, due to their sensitivity they are prone to more false alarms and they have a shorter life span than Photoelectric.  Photoelectric detects the dangerous slow smoldering fire and is not as inclined to give false alarms.  Photoelectric is the only detector endorsed by the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters).

What type of smoke detector should I buy?

The [P] Photoelectric smoke detector is the suggested detector because it detects the poisonous smoldering smoke much more effectively than the [i] Ionic type detector and it has few false alarms.  The smoldering smoke is associated with more deaths than the flames themselves.  I recommend purchasing a Child Awake Alarm that uses voice instead of tone If you have children under 14 living in your home.  Studies have shown that most children do not hear smoke detector tones when they are asleep.

Are smoke detectors expensive?

Cheap Ionic detectors can be purchased for $15 but these are not recommended because they do not detect slow smoldering smoke. Photoelectric detectors cost around $30 and combination detectors with both sensors average $50.

Where should I install my smoke detectors?

At a minimum smoke detectors should be located on each floor of your home and one in each bedroom.  They should be mounted on the ceiling or on the wall approximately 6" down.  When mounting detectors in a large open area consider that each detector should cover approximately 30 feet if unobstructed.

How often should I change the batteries in my smoke detector?

It is recommended to change your batteries at least once a year or by your manufacturer's suggestion.  Choose a date that is easy to remember like your birthday or daylight savings and replace your battery then.  Continue to test your detector monthly.  Remember that hardwired detectors may have a battery back up in case of power outages that needs to be checked.  10 year worry free detectors are also available that have a sealed battery that lasts the life of the detector.

Do I need a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector?

CO is the #1 gas killer in America.  If you have any gas appliance or wood burning in your home it is recommended to have a detector on each level of the home and one in each bedroom.

How do I make an Escape Plan?

A good Escape Plan should include 2 escape routes out of each room in case one exit is blocked by fire.  The plan should be practiced regularly with the entire family and should end at your Safe Meeting Place. Attempt to have the whole family safely evacuated within 2 minutes.

What is a Safe Meeting Place?

This is a place outside your home that each member of the family meets if there is an evacuation emergency.  Try to have your meeting place in a visible front yard location so you and the fire department can quickly account for all family members.  Practice your Escape Plan regularly and make sure everyone knows where to meet.

What type of extinguisher should I have in my kitchen?

Either a B/C or A/B/C extinguisher is a good choice for the kitchen.  Just ensure that it is easily accessible and that you know how to use it. Canister extinguishers are becoming popular because they are smaller and less intimidating than the extinguishers with the pull pin.
